Te Waimana Kaaku

Provides its' Hapū members access to current information about Te Waimana Kaaku, it's Tribal, Pā and Hapū. The Tribal aims to be the first point of contact and central communications for external groups and/or individuals proposing projects within Te Waimana affecting our Hapū or our resources.

Our History

Te Waimana Kaaku Tribal, in Te Rohe o Te Waimana, represents the interests of
12 Pā and 9 Hapū.

First established in the 1950s under the NZ Māori Council framework, it was initially known as the Eastern Tūhoe Tribal Executive Committee. For a number of years following, operations occurred under the mantel then known as Te Waimana Kaaku Tribal Executive Committee. Te Waimana Kaaku is no longer a member of the Māori Council,
hence the name change.

‘The Role of your Tribal’

  • TE WAIMANA KAAKU
  • GOVERNANCE & COMMS

  • SHARED DEVELOPMENT

  • Te Waimana Kaaku is a collective of two representative delegates from each of the 12 Pā. These delegates are elected every three years. From this collective, delegates appoint a Chairperson. The secretarial, financial and administrative support is automatically assumed by the General Manager and the Administrator of Te Waimana Kaaku.

  • Te Waimana Kaaku Tribal plays an overall governance role   and provides the primary communications and collective decision-making for our Hapū.

Importantly the Kaaku does not assume nor replace the authority or mana of our Pā or Hapū.

  • Our Hapū come together regularly to discuss, debate, promote and support matters that are of concern to our Whānau, Hapū and Iwi.

We do this with a view to bringing collective thinking, passion and energy to progress our efforts for the betterment of our people.

Te Waimana Kaaku Tribal Hui

Thirteen hui are held throughout the year, each hui being hosted by one of our Pā. Fundraisers are held by the Hapū to coincide with each meeting of the Tribal and in this way each kaupapa supports the other.

  • Current Officers

    • Matt Te Pou – Chair
    • Maringi Baker – General Manager
    • Wairaka Biddle – Office Administrator

  • Tribal Hui

Tribal hui are open to any Hapū member to attend, listen, pātai and generally catch up with Hapū and Iwi progress. Kaupapa discussed at Tribal Hui are raised by Hapū through their delegates. The Tribal responds to current and topical kaupapa as it arises. All decisions of the Tribal are voted upon by Hapū delegates only.
